Scholarship Coverage

The Rhodes Scholarship offers:

• Money for living expenses (£15,144 per year)
• Payment for all University and College fees
• One economy class airplane ticket to Oxford at the beginning of the scholarship and one ticket back home at the end
• The application fee for the University
• The scholarship lasts for two years, as long as the recipient does well academically and behaves properly. If someone wants to pursue a DPhil (PhD), they can apply for an extension for a third year.

Rhodes Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Rhodes Scholarship, candidates must meet the following requirements:

1. To become a citizen or resident of Rhodes, applicants must meet the specific criteria for citizenship and residency in that constituency. You can check the list of eligible countries for each constituency.

2. Education: To be eligible, all applicants must have finished a bachelor’s degree with honors by October. Additionally, their academic standing should be high enough to meet the competitive entry requirements of the University of Oxford. In Canada, a minimum GPA of 3.75/4.0, or its equivalent, is expected.
3. Age: The age limits for applicants vary depending on the constituency. The minimum age limit is 18, and the maximum is usually 24 or 25 by October 1st of the year following the selection. Please carefully review the age requirements specific to your constituency before applying. Successful candidates will start their studies at Oxford in October following the selection process. Normally, the scholarship cannot be deferred.
4. Language requirement: Proficiency in English is necessary.

Documents Needed:

To apply for the scholarship, you will must need to provide the following documents:

1. Curriculum vitae (CV) or a list of your main activities. Remember not to include a photo in your CV for this scholarship.
2. Proof of your academic record, including transcripts of your undergraduate degree and any postgraduate studies you have undertaken.
3. A personal statement or essay, which should include a clear explanation of what you want to study at Oxford and why.
4. If English is not your first language, you must demonstrate your English language proficiency. Please refer to the requirements for more information its best for you.
5. You can Must provide Proof of your age, such as a birth certificate or passport.
6. A photograph of yourself.
7. Four reference letters from individuals who can provide confidential feedback on your character, intellect, academic achievements, personal qualities, extracurricular activities, and leadership abilities. These references should not come from individuals who are related to you.

(4) Those who have been chosen as potential candidates will receive an invitation to attend a social gathering and a final interview. It is important that you are available to participate in both of these events in person, as no arrangements can be made for alternative dates, times, or methods. Without an interview, no candidate will be selected. The Rhodes Trust will cover the expenses for travel, including a First Class rail ticket for a round trip, but excluding hotel costs. However, international travel expenses for those coming from other countries cannot be provided.

(5) All applicants will receive an email notifying them of the outcome of their application.

Selection Process:

Selection for the Rhodes Scholarship is based solely on merit, without considering financial status. Rhodes Scholarship recipients are selected only based on their skills and abilities. Factors like being married, race, ethnicity, color, gender, religion, sexual orientation, social background, disability, caste, or any other unrelated criteria are not taken into account.

Providing such information in the ‘Outreach’ section of the application form is optional, but it helps us ensure fairness in our selection process and effectiveness in our outreach efforts. Those involved in the selection will only have access to anonymized summary statistics, without any trace back to individuals. You are applying for a Rhodes Scholarship to begin studies at the University of Oxford in October 2021.

The scholarship cannot be deferred. The Rhodes Scholarship is given only if you are accepted to the University of Oxford. If a suitably qualified candidate cannot be found, no selection will be made. The decision made by the Selection Committee is final.

After being selected:

1. Please be aware that if you are chosen, you will need to apply to the University of Oxford shortly after your selection. We will provide you with all the necessary information once you are selected.
2. Rhodes House in Oxford will have access to the complete applications of successful candidates. They may use the scholarship references from those applications, if applicable, to support the candidates’ subsequent application to the University of Oxford.
3. We strongly encourage successful candidates to confidentially disclose any medical conditions or special needs that may require academic or personal assistance in Oxford. This disclosure is completely voluntary and is only requested to ensure that Rhodes House can provide appropriate support and facilitate a smooth transition to Oxford.
